Jesse Powell emphasizes that “reserve proof audits require cryptographic proof of client balances and wallet controls”
Kraken’s Jesse Powell has a lot to say about the recent demise of FTX. An exchange executive recently said the trading platform’s impact was a “huge setback.” The Kraken is a member of Nick Carter’s Proof of Reserves list or “wall of fame”, and Powell has also recently spoken on the subject of Proof of Reserves (POR). time. Kraken is known to have “full his POR“, described as “auditor-assisted user verification with the Merkle approach, at some point.”
Just recently, cryptocurrency price aggregation website coinmarketcap.com (CMC) announced the launch of the stockpile proof dashboard, with Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao ( CZ) tweeted about the CMC POR dashboard. “@Coinmarketcap has released a new exchange reserve he dashboard feature,” CZ said on Nov. 22. On the same day, Kraken executive Jesse Powell tweeted about his new CMC feature.
“I said I was going to be more proactive in raising issues, and this is one of them,” Powell said. = assets minus liabilities.’Reserves’ != a list of wallets,” Kraken executives explained. Powell Added:
Proof of Reserve AUDIT requires cryptographic proof of client balance and wallet control. A #Proofreserves audit requires: 1. Total client debt (auditors must exclude negative balances). 2. User-verifiable cryptographic proof that each account was included in the total. 3. A signature proving that the custodian is in control of the wallet.
Paper Says Full POR Is Easy to Accomplish, But Crypto Exchange Boss Keeps Merkleproof Audit Promise
POR buzz comes at a time when the crypto community is at stake and exchanges promise to share POR audits with Merkle Proof . A handful of exchanges have shared their list of addresses, and analytics firm Nansen has also published a dashboard of exchange wallets. When Powell shared his sentiments on Twitter, he also shared his archive.org link to the paper “Proof of Your Bitcoin Reserves“.
This paper discusses how a flat list of accounts/balances can be achieved, the Merkle approach to proving liabilities, andproving assets” is explained. To “prove custody of an asset,” an “intuitive and easy solution is to sign a statement of ownership with all relevant private keys,” the paper explains.
While this paper and Jesse Powell explain that a full POR can be easily achieved with Merkle’s approach and proof of private key ownership, many exchange bosses , as well as approach-based audits that Merkle has promised to share, as well as cold and hot wallet addresses. The only thing left is the crypto community that remembers such a promise and holds the exchange’s CEO to them.
